What To Look For When Buying a Used Car PDF Print E-mail

Because of the high cost which is associated with buying new cars, many people choose to buy used cars instead. They tend to be much cheaper in price and are easy to finance with dealers. However, there are some disadvantages to buying used cars, and it is important to understand the pros and cons. Many people are under the impression that they have to obtain financing in order to acquire a quality automobile, and this isn't the case if you know what to look for.

Statistics show that the average car will last 12 years if cared for properly. Most people sell their cars every four years when they have about 40,000 miles. What this means is that there are some good deals if you know where to look. If you are looking to get a new car, a used car that is a year or two older than the latest model can be a great deal. The first thing you should decide is the type of car you want. If you have a family you will obviously want a car which can accomodate them. If you are looking to save money on gas, you will want a car which is fuel efficient.

There are five things you will want to pay attention to when buying a used car, and these factors can be applied to new cars as well. The five factors are comfort, safety features, visibility, and handling. If you are buying a used car from a dealer, check the blue book value of the vehicle to make sure the dealer is offering it for a fair price. For example, if you are buying a specific model which has 120,000 miles and is 9 years old, the price that the dealer is asking should match the blue book value. It doesn't make since to pay more money for a car than it is worth.

Before you purchase a car from a dealer, make sure they are members of a reputable organization like the Division of Motor Vehicles. Find out how long the dealer has been in business. If it is less than two years, it is best to look elsewhere. They haven't been around long enough to garner a solid reputation.  When you have found a car you're interested in, check with your insurance company to find out how much you will have to pay before you buy it. New car dealerships are generally the best places to find used cars.

The vehicles offered by these dealers will be in good condition, and they will generally not be more than two years old. High quality dealers will have a service department which is full of supplies. They tend to be more expensive than used car dealers, but they are usually worth it. When you buy a used car, it is important to inspect it beforehand. Make sure there are no serious mechanical problems which would cost a lot of money to fix. The transmission is one of the most expensive parts of the car, and you will want to check it carefully for problems. If you don't know what to look for, bring someone with you that does.

If you don't know anyone who can help you inspect a car, ask the dealer if it can be taken to an inspection shop that you recommend. If they agree, let them drive it there.
