What You Should Look For When Test Driving a Car PDF Print E-mail

When you are looking to buy either a used or new car, it is important to make sure it runs properly. Automobiles are an expensive investment, and you should want the best vehicle you can afford. One of the best ways to determine the quality of a car is by taking it for a test drive. In this article I will show what things to look for. Once you start the car, the first thing you should do is press down on the brake.

A good brake pedal should only go down about an inch, and it should be firm. If it feels weak, this is a sign that the car may have brake problems. When you press down on the break, it shouldn't go down slowly. If it does, this usually means that the master cylinder may be leaking. When the car starts, pay careful attention to the engine. Do you hear knocks or rattles? If you do, this is a sign that the car may have engine problems. The engine should have a smooth and steady sound at all times.

The engine is a very important part of the car, and it may cost thousands of dollars to replace. The last thing you want to do is purchase a car that has engine problems. When you rev the engine, make sure no smoke is coming out of the exhaust pipe. If you see excessive amounts of smoke, this means the engine needs to be replaced. Any dealer trying to sell you this car is looking to rip you off. When you start driving the car, pay attention to the automatic transmission. It should always shift smoothly. If you notice that it jerks or slips, this is a sign that the transmission may be faulty.

If you are using a manual transmission, it should shift gears smoothly. If you notice it grinding, this is another sign that the car has problems. Take the car for a drive on a smooth road, and slightly remove your hands from the steering wheel. Does it vibrate? Do you notice the car pull in either direction? If the answer to either of these questions is yes, this means that the front of the car is not properly aligned, and may need repairs. To test the brake, driving down an empty oad at about 30 miles per hour. After you've reached this speed, press down firmly on the brakes, but don't lock the wheel. Make sure no other cars are nearby.

The brakes should work together and the car should stop in a straight position. If the car pulls to either side, this is a sign that the brakes need to be adjusted or repaired. You should also be careful when buying a car based on odometer readings. They can easily be manipulated to make the car appear that it has less miles than it actually does. If you notice scratches around the odometer, or it appears lose, this means someone has probably changed it. Taking a car for a drive is the best way to test it. By looking for the things mentioned in this article, you will avoid getting a car that breaks down after you buy it.
