Car Insurance Facts PDF Print E-mail

If you ask most people about car insurance, you will get a number of different responses. Some of the responses will be based on factual information, while others will not. Understanding the myths and facts related to car insurance will help you make the best decision for choosing both the car and the company which will insure it. One of the most common myths about car insurance is that companies will charge higher rates based on the color of the vehicle.

The color is not a factor in how much you will pay. The factors which you should pay attention to are the make, year, model, and engine of a car. Another obvious factor which determines the cost is your driving history. If you're an older person who has never been in an accident, your rates will be much lower than a younger person who has been in an accident. Another common myth is that insurance companies aren't regulated and can charge as much as they want.

The truth of the matter is that each state regulates car insurance companies. The state looks at the data held by these companies as well as the rate, and companies aren't allowed to stray from these rates. One common myth about comprehensive coverage is that it can protect a driver in all situations. In reality, comprehensive coverage can only protect you when your car is stolen, vandalized, or destroyed by extreme weather conditions. It does not protect you in the event of a collision unless it was with an animal.

There are a number of myths surrounding rental insurance, and failing to know the facts can lead to a lot of headaches. One of the most common myths about rental coverage is that it protects the rental car if you get into an accident while driving it. In reality, rental coverage only protects you if you own a car that is in a repair shop because of an accident, and you need to use a rental car. Another common myth is that bundling your insurance products will allow you to get a low rate.

While some insurance companies may offer this, it is the exception rather than the rule. The best way to lower your insurance is to talk to an agent who can create a custom package which suits your needs. The last common myth is the one about insurance rates automatically dropping when you turn 25. People of all ages get into accidents, and their insurance rate is determined by their driving history. It is true that people under 25 tend to have higher insurance rates. However, this isn't always the case, and there is an exception to every rule.

Understanding the difference between myth and reality when it comes to car insurance is very important. In fact, not knowing the differences can lead to a lot of serious problems. At the very least, you may end up placing an emphasis on something which isn't important. At the very worst, you could end up having to spend a lot of money because you made an assumption about your insurance instead of getting the facts.
