Filing a Car Insurance Claim PDF Print E-mail

Hopefully you will never be involved in a car accident, but unfortunately it might happen. If you are ever involved in a car accident, following these tips can help you file your car insurance claim smoothly and easily.

Call police and ambulances to the scene, and document as much as possible.

If you are involved in an accident, the first step is to remain calm. Call the police as soon as possible, and if anyone is injured, call an ambulance as well - even if the injuries seem minor. Have the police officer help you gather information from everyone involved in the accident, including names, addresses, phone numbers, and car insurance information. If there are any witnesses, get their names, addresses, and phone numbers as well. If you or the police have a camera, take pictures of the scene of the accident, the damage to all cars involved, the surrounding area, etc.

Report the accident to your car insurance provider as soon as possible.

Some car insurance providers may offer a 24-hour phone number that you can call at any time to report an accident. If your car insurance provider does not have a 24-hour phone number and is closed at the time of your accident, call as soon as it opens. It is important to let your car insurance provider know about the accident as soon as possible, and some car insurance providers may have a limited time frame within which an accident must be reported to be eligible for filing a claim. Informing your car insurance company right away will also make it easier for evidence about the accident to be gathered.

Do not talk to anyone about the accident except the police and your insurance company.

Other people involved in the accident or their insurance providers may contact you about the accident. Unless your car insurance provider tells you otherwise, do not talk to them about the accident, as they may try to use things you say against you. Do not admit the accident was your fault, even if you believe it was; the police and the car insurance companies will decide who was at fault. You may want to ask your car insurance provider what to do if these people call, so that you can be prepared.

Get your car fixed only after your claim is approved.

Do not get your car fixed on your own and expect your car insurance provider to pay for it later. Your car insurance provider may want to send someone to assess the damage to your car, or have your car sent to a specific repair shop. Wait until your insurance provider contacts you about your car first; and if you feel they are taking too long, call and ask what is going on with your claim.

Always drive safely and try to avoid accidents, but keep these tips in mind just incase you are ever involved in one
